066: Day 79: June 26, 2021: Butte to Deer Lodge MT: 39 miles today and 3170.5 in total (m208.9)

I had to repair a slow puncture on a trailer wheel before we could leave the 2 Bar Lazy H RV Campgrounds this morning. We had been reinflating the tyre occasionally, but the Green Slime needed an extra boost. Also, I had to replace my bicycle pump in Butte with the trusted one breaking just before Butte.
We used the Frontage Road (a service road that runs parallel to the I-90) for most of the day today. These marshes/ ponds provide a great habitat for birds.
We passed under the I-15 for the last time and we could frame the mountains and hills with the bridge.
We took this picture of the I90 and the mountains overlooking the Clark Fork Valley from the Frontage Road.
Christine enjoying a bit of gravel road as we cycle through farmland.
This was our first view of the Clark Fork Valley and we spent the entire day cycling in this valley.
The I90 was quite busy with trucks and RVs.
We passed this beautifully maintained cemetery.
The Frontage Road disappeared for a while (even though Google Maps shows that it continues) and we had to go through the Town of Opportunity.
The Fire Station and City Offices.
Christine and I had a quick snack on the approach road to Opportunity where it crosses the Clark Fork. The town was probably built in the heyday of the Anaconda Smelters and does not show a lot of growth now.
The Clark Fork River.
The Frontage Road next to the I-90.
We passed Warm Springs where there is a beautiful hospital building used as an institution now.
The colors of the flowers and grasses make such a beautiful scene.
We passed the remains of a cattle feedlot and realised that is would take many years before this land would get back to what it used to be.
The I-90 and the Frontage Road.
The mountains are beautiful.
We came to Race Track and stopped at the Gem Store and Bar for a cold Coke and a chocolate. This became a longish stop with us talking to the barman and some of the customers. As we were leaving some new customers entered and we noted that one had an interesting number plate on his red car, MR SPUD.
The existing train tracks in the foreground and an abandoned one behind.
We saw this sawmill on the outskirts of the town of Deer Lodge.
The town also constructed lovely walking trails along the river. As usual, we used these
and soon came to this bridge and the town.
I could not miss a photo of this electric locomotive, used for a long time on the Milwaukee Road Railway Line. This was a very large Company and used these electric trains on their tracks from the Pacific.
The Old Prison
and the icecream stop. Hmmmm the liquorice and huckleberry flavors were both great.
Central Deer Lodge.
Our camp site at the KOA-Camp.
We had lovely Burgers at The Outpost. The people are so friendly and we left much later than planned. The kitchen was already closed when we came in, but Jo asked the chef, incidentally also the owner of the Outpost, to prepare two burgers for us.
Overall, we had a wonderful day.

  1. It seems odd seeing so many empty roads. Here in DC we spend so much time sitting in traffic, surrounded by cars and people.
