050: Day 62: June 9: Ewing to Stuart NE, 51 miles today and 2118.5 in total (m51.3)

When we were cycling through Ewing NE we saw that the town will have it's 150-year celebration this year and the Savidge Brothers, the first Nebraskans to build and fly airplanes, feature strongly. How else, if they lived here??
A mural in Ewing.
A historic Marker for the Savidge Brothers.
The Cowboy Trail continued along the road 275/20. Since this section is also part of the section where fellow cyclists told us about the goatheads, we stayed on the road.
We cycled past Inman and its lovely town sign/mural.
Bob has not serviced a car here for a long time and probably would not again soon.
We were seeing fewer trees as we were moving west. However, this farm has a couple of beautiful cottonwoods.
These cattle are wise. It is too hot to be out in the sun.
But these three horses had to show off. They are beautiful.
Then we also saw some strange animals. This one did not want to move.
The trail continued to
O'Neill, the Irish Capital of Nebraska and
our third package from Idaho.
We did very well during the morning and completed about 40 miles to Atkinson. So, on reaching Atkinson, we looked for a gas station with a eatery section and  immediately sat down to enjoy the salami.
We enjoyed this beautiful pond along the road to Atkinson.
This town has a large livestock market right next to the trail.
We started on the trail again and stopped at the nicely decorated "depot" of Atkinson.
We enjoyed being back on the trail again and saw so many flowers
and different shades of green.
The heat was beginning to catch up on us and we cycled from shady spot to shady spot - sometimes these are miles apart.
We cycled into this oasis of trees just before we came to Stuart. As we got into town we saw a Inn-sign and immediately knew we had to stop. The Inn was closed so we cycled into town to look for the Municipal Park. On the way, we stopped and asked two pedestrians the way. Turned out they were also cycling the Cowboy Trail and that they checked into a beautiful Bed & Breakfast, the Sisters House. David and Marcie Lynn immediately started arranging that we could also check into the B&B. The owner lives in another town and we did the check-in in faith and will pay for the room in the next two days when we should receive the invoice by e-mail.
We had such a lovely evening with David and Marcy. It was great to share stories and just relax with a beer.
The travellers getting ready for the next stage.🥰🥰🥰
As a parting shot, Chrisitne took a photo of this fellow relaxing in the shade.

  1. Lots of fascinating things in this post! I never hear of the Savidge Bros., such a fascinating story. I would love to have a close-up view of the old car rusting away in front of Bob's. You guys make the best friends everywhere you go! That's wonderful. Finally: the squirrel relaxing is my favorite of all the photos! -Jim

  2. Going well Ben & Christine ... very well done guys. Ben, you seem to be fading away ... looks like the skeleton staff have taken over. The countryside along the trail looks amazing, but so far only a small herd of cows under a tree ... not a cowboy in sight.

Can't believe 62 days already on the saddle ... awesome. No doubt some new tyres were fitted somewhere along the route and some other minor repairs (hopefully no more rear wheel gear deraillers broken.
Best wishes for the remainder ... have you checked if you'll be allowed into your final destination town without vaccine passport? Or did you stop at a clinic en route for a jab? Would be terrible if they turned you back to Washington DC.
