055: Day 68: June 15: Chadron to Harrison NE: 50 miles today (15 by truck) and 2396.9 in total (m329.5)

We saw these deer outside our Motel in Chadron this morning when we left to do some shopping at the Walmart.
There was a lingering thunderstorm in the area and it kept us in shadow for
about two-three hours. We were grateful, as the heat was already impacting us.
The surrounding area is quite dry and we noted that some of the grass fields are also under irrigation.
About 10 miles before Crawford we passed this monolith. Looks like a great place to climb. BUT, there must be many snakes. We saw a lot of dead ones along the road today.
There were many birds at this wetland.
We came closer to the buttes and enjoyed the scenery.
This farmer is baling some more grass.
We stopped for a soda pop at the store in Crawford. The lady behind the counter let us stand in their beer refridgerating room to cool off a bit.
Here we started on the White River Trail. This is about 4 miles long and runs through beautiful countryside.
We had beautiful views of the buttes and
some longhorn cattle.
There are many stops with a roof for shade. This one I particularly liked.
We came to Fort Robinson State Park to soon, as this is where the trail ends.
This Fort was huge and must have been quite influential in extending Government control over this part of the States.
Just outside Fort Robinson, we climbed out of the valley on a road section called Smiley Canyon.
We pedalled and
pushed and enjoyed the scenery.
After about and hour and a half we finished with the climb only to be met by a brutal wind blowing at more than 20 miles per hour.
We found some shade and decided to wait out the wind. However, the heat became unbearable and we still had some 15 miles to go to the next town.
We called the motel and the manager, Dusty, and his friend, Bob, soon arrived with these two trucks to come and pick us up. Several people stopped and gave us Gatorade and water.
We were very surprised to see this vehicle as one of the two "rescue" vehicles. Bob soon corrected us and said he bought it at an auction several years ago but he has not yet taken off the signs.
Bob in the middle and Dusty next to him. Great guys and thanks so much for love and, especially, Godly love. They had no price for the shuttle service, so we left a small donation.
We shall not forget the Sage Motel, Harrison. The building itself consists of stables broken down at Fort Robinson and rebuilt as a Motel.
Nor shall we forget the Longhorn Saloon Bar and Grill wher we had fabulous burgers and great cold beers.
