024: Day 31 May 9: Dayton OH: National Museum of the United States Air Force

We had a rainy day in Dayton and decided to stay over and visit the National Museum of the US Air Force. This was a great day and I specifically enjoyed it so much. Thanks Christine for being patient and for suppressing your tiredness right up to the end.
This is a massive museum, much larger than the Smithsonian and with an incredible number of planes, rockets and supporting exhibits. It would probably take you a week to get a proper understanding of the size.
I selected a few photos and shall leave it to you to make out which these are.
This is a great exhibit showing what goes on under the "skin" of an aircraft. This is an F86 Sabre.
The backside of a Valkery XB-70. This is a Mach 3-Bomber that never went into operations.
The Reaper Drone is much larger than I expected.
A mix of ICBMs.
I strongly advise that you take a trip down to Dayto OH to visit this Museum. This will be a highlight even if you do not see anything else.

  2. Trust you gave Christine a day off from pedalling on Mother's day (or does US celebrate on a different date?).
Recognised the Cooker Tri-plane and Sopwith Camel, Stealth, X1,Sabre and Drone (agreed, it is larger than expected).
Reminds me of our visit to Smithsonian in 2003 where Ebola Gay and Discovery shuttle on display.
    Take care & keep Safe

  4. Thank you for sharing these photos! I wish my Dad had lived to see this. In 2015 I visited the Naval Air Museum in Pensacola which paled to this. Thanks for the call, and have a double scoop of calcium...it's your birthday! Jim
