007: Day 10, April 18, 2021:White's Ferry to Harper's Ferry: (About 25 miles - m2.4)

We had another wonderful day today. Spring is in the air with the flowers absolutely beautiful and the weather just perfect. We woke up at our camp site at Marble Quarry and I smiled when I thought of Christine's food order yesterday afternoon at the White's Ferry Store; she wanted a grilled cheese sandwich with a slice of ham. Two-thirds through her first half she mentioned, "And I wanted a grilled cheese!!" Anyway, it was too late to return the sandwich and both of us were too tired to again walk to the store.:):):)

Roz joined us this morning and cycled with us to Brunswick where Bob was waiting with two surprises - Evelyn and Michael. Thanks, guys, for the surprise and the great moral support. The C&O Canal towpath has so many treasures along the way. We had many cyclists and hikers today, just enjoying the day and the points of interest, some of them are below; Two very beautiful women that are great company, both on the trail and elsewhere. The Monocacy River Viaduct. These "bridges" were built to carry the canal over rivers. There are several on the C&O Canal. The Towpath is in great shape and Spring is beautiful.
Catoctin River Viaduct. In 2018 a flood washed away this viaduct and we could use the low-water detour. When the river comes down, trail users must use a 8-mile road detour.
We arrived at Brunswick and had a wonderful meal with all at the Beans in the Belfry. This is a great place and should be visited by all.We finished off our lunch with ice cream at Boxcar Burgers, Brunswick.
After this it was a sad goodbye and we were so grateful to both Evelyn and Michael as well as Bob and Roz for doing some shopping for us. We had a great offload in DC and left our stove plus all the pots, pans and food behind. So, now we have to adjust and buy some stuff. We shall see how this works out the next couple of days.
We are both tired today and after about 25 miles in total, we stopped at a great camp site, Huckleberry Hill, about 2.5 miles upstream of Harper's Ferry. We shall have a good rest and tackle another section of the C&O Canal Towpath tomorrow.

  1. Great to hear you are now trekking along the C&O canal route. Mathew did a Boy Scouts bike and camp trip years ago, but you appear to have less supplies and less support than those youngsters did (plus they rode west to east, an easier ride I believe?). You deserve kuddo's and high five's. Stay safe and enjoy all your discoveries!
